$4 Shelve

Near my home there is this great American Cancer Society Thrift Store.  They have tons of great things, and the store isn't over crowded so you can really see the items they have for sale.  Plus they have great sales from time to time.

I stopped by one afternoon last week to take a quick check to see if any new treasures had come in.  I saw this great shelve leaning against the wall.  It had great bones plus it was only $4, SOLD!!

The shelve was in great shape structurally, it was white with a crackle finish on the top exposing gold.  Gold is not really a favorite color mine and the piece had some scratches in it which I knew a new coat of paint would fix.

I pulled out my trusty Restoration Hardware Blue Sage and gave it a new coat of paint.

Once I finished I felt that it needed something to finish off the piece, it was looking too plain. I went to Lowes and picked up a wood applique and using a little Gorilla Glue I glued it to the front of the piece.  I applied a little silver Rub n' Buff to the wood piece to give it some dimension.

Now I have a brand new shelve for my home.   The total cost of the project was under $10.

Thift Store Finds

I went a little thrift store shopping today, shhh don't tell my husband.  I'm glad I did as I found my favorite store is having a 50% off sale tomorrow and they have held back some special items for the sale.  I will definitely be there at 8 am.

I thought I would share with you some of the items that I found.

How cool are these wall hangings?  They are originally from Home Goods, I got them for $5 each.

Can you believe they still had the $14.99 sticker from Home Goods?

How about this new mail sorter for $10?  I will painting it to match my new shelves in my office.  I think it is great.  Now I have a place to put my mail, Chad's mail, and junk mail.  Currently we just put it on the kitchen counter.

I've been looking for a large jewelry box to place by my bed to put all my jewelry during the night.  The one I have currently is a little small.  I got sterling silver jewelry box for $3, I know super cheap!!!

Doesn't it have great detail on the top?

I would love to hear about some of your great finds, so please share some of your great finds!

Thift Store Find

A few months ago I purchased a desk off craigslist but it was too small for our house.  Let the new desk search begin.  After a few visits to thrift stores and searching craigslist I came up with nothing, and gave up my search.

On a Saturday afternoon my husband and I decided to kill some time by stopping by our local thrift store.  Way in the back of their furniture warehouse was this dirty desk covered in cob webs.  I passed by it the first time but the second pass threw I say it.  It had great lines and gorgeous legs, I had to have it.  When I saw the price tag I really had to have it, only $25 plus someone else did all the sanding work.  Yay!

After a little cleaning I could tell it was going to work perfectly.  After looking in the drawers I could tell that it had been a really dark brown at one time with octagon design on the back and on the drawers.  The desk was missing a few knobs, which is ok the original knobs were very ugly and plain wood.

I began my search for the perfect paint. As you can see from the before picture I picked a few colors to try out before I found the perfect one.  Ask you local paint store for a sample size, this will save you a lot of money if you happen to pick the wrong color.  Usually a sample size is $2-4.  I save my sample sizes for small projects such as painting a picture frame or small box.

I finally decided on Blue Sage by Restoration Hardware.  I really like their paint it covers very well, plus they have great classic colors that go with anything.  I normally love their Silver Sage color but wanted something a little darker for my desk.

While painting this desk I skipped priming the desk, I don't recommend this but I was in a hurry.  After painting I realized that I needed to seal the paint to prevent the paint from being scratch, a desk can take a lot of abuse.  I purchased Minwax clear wax to seal the desk, it works really good.

The desk now needed new knobs, I went to my local Lowes.  Lowes has a great selection of knobs for really reasonable prices.  I purchased these great satin nickle knobs.  I really like the way the knobs pop against the Blue Sage.

Here is a better picture, the first one was taken with my Iphone.

This is the brush nickel pulls that I got at Target, which are now available at Lowes.

The Tale of $.25 Gold Frames

Yesterday I decided to visit my favorite local thrift store The Salt Mine to see what treasures they had at their clearance sale.  I came across a stack of gold frames, after digging through the stack I came across three similar sized frames for $.25 each.  I couldn't believe the price, $.25 they're mine for that price it didn't matter what I did to them they were a steal.

They were all a little different in the decoration, but with a little spray paint they would look like they were always meant to be a set.  I got out my Rustoleum Heirloom White Spray Paint (which is one of my favorite paint colors) and went to town.

After I painted them white I felt they needed something so I got out the Rub n' Buff silver leaf.  Using my finger I rubbed it on the edges and the little details.  I love this silver leaf paste it really took the frames from ordinary to extraordinary and added that little bit of glam that I like.

My next challenge was what to put in the frames. I went to Michaels Craft Store and purchased a 12x12 piece of scrap booking paper to frame, yes scrap booking paper.  Over the years I have framed all sorts of items from gift bags, calendars, greeting cards, and paper.  You never know where your next piece of art can come from, plus sometimes these items can be less expensive then buying an art piece.

After framing the scrap book paper I noticed that two of the three frames had hooks to hang the frames but the other frame was missing a hook.  Whats a girl to do?  Get out the ribbon and Gorilla Glue!  I found three scraps of brown ribbon and cut them to size.  After I ran the iron over them to smooth out any lumps I glued them to the back of the frames.  Problem solve, the new problem is where in my office should I hang them?
